Chicken stories

"Eleanor" our beloved little hen that could

One of our chicks developed a severely maloccluded, malformed beak commonly referred to as "scissor-beak" or "crossed-beak". She didn't grow very much despite us separating her from larger chicks, providing her food in deeper dishes, mashes and slurries, and syringe feedings. Luckily, we found a good "chicken mash" recipe with added vitamins and other nutritional supplements and have been tube feeding her 2-3 times daily. She comes running over to us anytime she feels hungry and loves being held and carried around. We love our little hen "Eleanor Crossbeak".

Adopted hen goes broody,

and now is a Foster Mom!

We adopted a small backyard flock of hens last year from a friend of our neighbor. Sadly, this man was sick with cancer and has since passed away. Before he died, we assured him his hens would live a good life here at Feather Leaf. One hen came to us with a severely distended, impacted, and sour crop. With help from my mom, I performed a simple surgery to remove the crop contents and she recovered quickly. This spring, she became broody and has been for weeks. While at the feed store I came upon many chicks who were, sadly, on sale for 99 cents! I knew I wanted to take at least some home - I ended up placing 10 (!) chicks with her and she instantly took to motherhood. She has been a fantastic momma hen ever since and we are thrilled to see her and the chicks thriving.

Meet some of our foster farm pig alumni!

Together with Chicagoland Pig Rescue, we have rescued several farm pigs including "jumpers" (1 month old piglets who fall off transport trucks), and some pretty horrific neglect cases. These "graduates" are now healthy and rehabilitated and will live out their lives in safe and loving homes.  Please check out CPR on Instagram and see what this amazing team has been up to and also get updates on CPR alumni including these piggies below!

Jackson

Jackson has been neutered and recovered from mange and pneumonia. He is living his best life in Missouri at a private home with his "sister" Hampshire pig.

Evan

Evan has grown up so much (over 200 lbs) and now living at Red Oak Animal Rescue (ROAR)  in Ohio with many other large breed pigs, enjoying the mud wallows.

Thomas and Teddy

These two are absolutely thriving and will soon be heading to their forever home at Odd Man Inn in Tennessee where they will be out in large fields with many other pigs.

Ducklings become DUCKS!

We adopted several ducklings following the Easter holiday. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for parents to indulge and purchase chicks and ducklings for their children as gifts...and soon after, the reality of having to care for an animal with specific needs and a long lifespan sets in. Sadly, many of these babies are surrendered to animal control or rescue organizations - worse yet, some are released into the wild to fend for themselves and soon fall prey, starve, or succumb to the elements.

Check out this great story in Nat Geo about the plight of ducks during the Easter holiday.

Another new friend ...

Welcome Floyd!

Floyd (formerly Outlaw) is an approximately 6-8 month old mixed breed pig we adopted in January from Oinking Acres Sanctuary in Indiana (https://oinkingacres.org/)  Oinking Acres rescues and rehomes hundreds of pigs and other farm animals (including our goat friends!) When I saw this little guy I knew he would be a great friend to join Gimli and Dot - they are all about the same age and can grow up together!  Floyd is the same size as the pot-bellied pigs but he has much thicker hair and stockier legs. His snout may turn up a little as he grows but he doesn't have the wadddles like some Kune kunes have. This breed originated in New Zealand and the name comes from Maori term for "fat and round". He is simply a joy and a very smart piggie! Welcome home Floyd!

Happy Holidays and a Healthy 2022 from Feather Leaf Farm

We have a new friend - Huckleberry the Hound!

Huckleberry the Hound (formerly Stevie Ray) is here! We adopted this 8 year old male Blue Tick Coonhound right before Christmas - he had been relinquished by his former owner back in September and was at the shelter since.  We are thrilled he has settled in so well here and seems to enjoy the company of Copper, Sunny the Bunny, the goats, chickens, and piggies as well as the local wildlife. We think he will love life here on Feather Leaf Farm!

Lots of new animal friends in Summer 2021

Meet the herd

In September, we adopted 11 (yes, 11!) goats.  We adopted 2 from northern Michigan - Brady and Bella. These are a brother - sister pair and were born at a petting zoo so really love people. The other 9 came from Oinking Acres, a pig rescue and sanctuary, who had collected them from various situations including neglect, surrender and strays.  They are a sweet bunch and are settling in here at Feather Leaf Farm.  We are in the process of restoring this lean-to shed so they are nice and cozy this winter.

Gimli and Dot

At the end of August, we finally were able to pick up these two pot-bellied pigs. They were born in late May at a fellow animal lover's house who took in the pregnant mother and older sister. The litter was 9 large and Gimli and Dot were the runts. Since arriving they have warmed our hearts and are certainly growing!  They are very sweet and now quite vocal around meal time. Their expressive eyes and clear intelligence make me re-think how we treat pigs in industrialized agriculture.
