Feels Like Summer - 2024 -
After a brief spring, here comes summer ...
Chicks hatched, strawberrries picked and eaten, and now its 90 degrees! We are currently in a heat wave and it's going to be hot all week. Up until now, we have enjoyed cool nights with temps as low as 50 degrees. But alas, summer is arriving early. We do lots of watering and filling of pools throughout these hots days to make sure all of the friends are cool and comfortable. Luckily, both groups of ducks have found the pond and frequently visit for a dip. Occasionally, we have many wild visitors (below: a gaggle of Canada geese on June 14).
Springtime Stewardship: Chicago Region Trees Initiative - 2024 -
On April 12th, Chicago Region Trees Initiative (CRTI) donated and helped us plant 15 native trees at our daughter's elementary school. The different classes came out throughout the planting to watch us work and learn all about the importance of trees. After over a year of planning, I am thrilled to see these young trees in the ground and excited to watch them grow and thrive, and be cherished by the students, teachers, staff, and community members for years to come!
Ups and downs and in between...SPRING is here! - 2024 -
From cold, clear skies (left) to cloudy, warm air (right), things are getting greener at Feather Leaf Farm. Spring is here though it's been a rollercoaster of temperatures with 70s one day and 20s the next. The few intense storms we had brought us lots of rain and with the melted snow from the crazy January storms, late February and early March were quite soggy, which the ducks absolutely loved. On warmer days, we definitely caught "spring fever" and the tortoises even got to go outside! The plants, trees, and wild and resident animals have had a couple rounds of whiplash but so far, it seems like everyone has adjusted to this new "normal".
After a warm December, a brutal January. - 2023-2024 -
It was a long couple of weeks with sustained subzero temperatures and biting winds. But we made it!
The ducks enjoyed a heated pole barn for the week, the chickens mainly stayed inside their coops, and the pigs huddled up in their barn with lots of straw. The goats relied on their fluffy coats (and chubby bodies) to stay warm, and took advantage of the additional shed we built last summer. The well froze so there were many, many trips with buckets of warm water for all of the friends. With the winds, we had huge snow drifts all along our driveway, requiring the tractor to dig us out!
We survived the bitter cold and two back to back snow storms. Its warmed up quite a bit and now we have M-U-D... Could winter be over already???

Goodbye Spring, Hello Summer - 2022 -
After a wet and busy spring, comes a hot and busy summer
Warmer (actually VERY HOT) weather, green leaves on the trees, flowers blooming and of course new friends! We decided to take on more chickens and also some keets (i.e. baby guineafowl). Guineafowl are hearty, though skittish, and good for tick management and sounding the alarm when predators are near. We are hoping to let them free range soon but are in the process of "training" them to come back to their coop at night. Devin made another beautiful coop especially for them. The other animals enjoyed all of the fresh greenery and are now staying cool with fans, lots of cold water from the well and kiddie pools to soak in. Once in a while there are watermelon parties too... stay cool and safe all! More to come...
Thanks for the support! - 2022 -
Our first fundraiser!
Within a few short months we have acquired many animals in need of homes and have frequent requests to take on more. While this was a mission for Feather Leaf Farm, we quickly realized we will need more resources to continue our work and provide homes for more animals, either as permanent residents or as temporary visitors until they find their forever homes.
We were lucky to be selected by Fluffy Cow Coffee to participate in a fundraiser at the end of March. Fluffy Cow Coffee donates $2.50 of each bag of coffee sold to a farm animal sanctuary. The coffee is delicious (and vegan) and with every sip you are helping farm animals in need!
Check out: https://fluffycowcoffee.com/ and if you decide to purchase a bag or two, please do so during the week of 3/28 - 4/3 and use code FEATHERLEAF at checkout!
Thanks so much for your support!
Winter is here - 2021 -
Snow, Ice, and Hungry Animals!
Winter has settled in here at Feather Leaf Farm and we have been busy clearing snow, cleaning out messy barns due to more indoor time, and continuously refreshing ice buckets with water. Without any browse or grass to nibble on, the goats are hungry and we have been going through a lot of hay. The piggies (well they are always hungry) need fresh straw in their pile to keep them warm. Even the wild birds and the (now single) duck on the pond needs replenished feeders and feed bowls. Everyone is always ready for their next meal! We are happy that we were able to finish up the goat shed in time for the real cold temperatures, high winds, and snow storms. In the spring we will finish the siding and maybe stain or paint it! More to come on this front ... until then, ice buckets! Countdown to spring.
Winterizing the hives...and we got 6 full frames of honey - 2021 -
Spring and Summer fun times on the farm - 2021-
Our new bee hives
We recently "adopted" two bee hives from a couple who moved back to the city and could not bring them along. We are excited to watch and learn about these cool creatures and of course enjoy honey come harvest time!
First farm stand
In late July, the girls joined forces with my parent's neighbors in Hyde Park to sell some of our eggs along with fresh basil, mint, and tomatoes. Fun was had by all and the kids even got a shout out in the Hyde Park Herald! https://tinyurl.com/sfh5afpv
Fishing on the pond
The girls were delighted to learn how to fish on our half acre pond, which is home to bluegill, crappie, bass, catfish, frogs, clams, and crayfish. It's wonderful to watch birds stop over for a quick meal such as cormorants, egrets, great blue herons, and rarely green herons.
Enjoying warm Spring days - 2021 -
Alfalfa hay, first cut
The girls had a blast playing on the large alfalfa round bales at sunset after the first cutting. We watched the entire process from mowing to tedding, raking, and finally baling. Living in the country allows for our better understanding of agriculture.
Tortoises in the sun
Our adopted tortoises, Cake and Grass (named by Phoebe) are enjoying the warmer months outdoors in their large grass enclosure. Devin built them this tortoise garage for shelter at night and during rain storms. These are sulcata (also known as African spur-thighed) tortoises, the third largest tortoise species in the world. Although popular as pets when they are small babies, they eat voraciously (strict herbivores) and grow rapidly requiring lots of food and space to roam and dig. This results in many sulcatas being relinquished and unfortunately, many do not find adequate homes.
